TEENS KILLED ON TURNPIKE WERE ON SIGHTSEEING TRIP:[THIRD Edition] - MATT MICHAEL, The Morning Call. Morning Call. Allentown, Pa.:Mar 26, 1989. p. B03
The three Williamsport area teen-agers killed Friday on the Pennsylvania Turnpike were reportedly on their way home from Philadelphia, where they spent Thursday visiting historical sites. A 71-year-old Conshohocken man also died and two other teen-agers were injured in the accident, which occurred on the Northeast Extension, about six miles south of the Lehigh Tunnel in North Whitehall Township. One of the injured teen-agers, 18-year-old Gundula Adomeit, is an exchange student from West Germany. She is living at the home of Dr. Franklin Wade of 1305 Campbell St., Williamsport. A Wade family member said yesterday that the teen-agers went to Philadelphia to visit historical sites and were supposed to be home long before the 1:08 a.m. accident. Family members interviewed Friday by state police at Williamsport said they were unaware that their children planned such a trip. Killed in the accident were Russell Fazio, 71, of 416 Pastell Lane, Conshohocken; Laurens Bjorn Kuhbier, 18, of Allenwood R. 1; John Pennella, 18, of Box 59, Hillsgrove; and Tiffany Pricher, 19, of 519 Southmont Ave., South Williamsport. Shawn Smith, 16, of 1101 Dewey Ave., Williamsport, remained in guarded condition and Adomeit remained in satisfactory condition yesterday at the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center. The cause of the accident remains a mystery to police, who said Fazio was driving in the wrong direction when his car collided head-on with the teen-agers' car, driven by Kuhbier. Police believe Fazio made an illegal U-turn and started driving south in the northbound lane. Trooper George Hetherington of the Pocono barracks, who is conducting the investigation, did not have the accident report completed when his shift ended yesterday. Police have reports from other drivers who said they saw Fazio driving the wrong way. "As far as what he did and why he did it, we have no explanation for that right now," said Trooper John Jennings. One theory is that Fazio was traveling north, made a U-turn and thought he was traveling in a southbound lane. Police do not know how far Fazio traveled south in the northbound lane. Lehigh County Coroner Wayne Snyder, who performed autopsies on Fazio and Kuhbier yesterday, said Fazio was reported missing at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. "Apparently he had left his house to go to the doctor's office and never returned," Snyder said. Snyder said Fazio and Kuhbier died from chest injuries. He does not plan to perform autopsies on Pennella and Pricher, and said their deaths were caused by multiple traumatic injuries. According to Snyder, the results of the tests performed on Fazio and Kuhbier will not be ready for several weeks. He said he has no idea if the drivers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He said the tests will "check for everything," including the possibility that Fazio suffered from Alzheimer's disease. The symptoms of Alzheimer's include impairment of judgment and disorientation. A third car carrying four people from New Jersey was also involved in the accident, but none of the occupants was injured. Police identified the occupants as Charles Connelly Jr., 26, Janice Connelly, 21, Charles Connelly Sr., 60, and 7-month old Charles Connelly. Police listed the Connellys' address as Lindenwold, N.J., but their Ford Mercury had a New York license plate, according to rescue personnel at the scene. The Mercury, which was traveling behind the teen-agers' vehicle, was moderately damaged. Trooper Lloyd Brooks of the Williamsport barracks said the teen-agers were friends from school. Kuhbier, who was driving his mother's Ford Thunderbird, was a senior at Williamsport High School. His mother and stepfather were in Vermont on a skiing trip, Brooks said. "She (Kuhbier's mother) said she tried to call him Thursday night, but no one would answer," Brooks said. "She didn't expect him to to be out." Kuhbier was a West German native who was living with his mother and stepfather in Allenwood, a suburb of Williamsport. Kuhbier's father and stepmother live in West Germany. Brooks said Pennella graduated from Williamsport High School, but dropped out of Williamsport Area Community College. Pricher, the stepdaughter of a news reporter for a local television station, attended Williamsport High School, but did not graduate. Smith and Adomeit attend Williamsport High School. Adomeit's family in West Germany has been notified of the accident.

Man sought in cemetery found dead (Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Tuesday, May 2, 2006, B-7)
A Nisbet man who had been missing since April 23 was found dead Sunday in the woods near Wildwood Cemetery in Loyalsock Township, according to the Lycoming County coroner. Michael Schaefer, 36, died as a result of a single bullet wound to the head and a rifle was found near his body, Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. said. Schaefer's body was in a densely wooded area and on a steep incline, he said. He did not have information about who found the body or when he was found. State police also didn't have information to give Monday. Numerous police departments surrounded the cemetery the afternoon of April 23 after they received a report Schaefer was despondent, armed with a hunting rifle and planned to commit suicide. During the initial search, police did not find any clues to his whereabouts. All indications are he committed suicide, Kiessling said.
